Clinical trial FAQs

  1. Who pays for clinical trial research?
  2. What are my health risks in participating in research?
  3. How can I participate in healthcare research?

--

Who pays for clinical trial research?

The companies that are developing the treatments, called sponsors, pay for all tests and treatments while you are in the clinical trial.

They also pay you for travel and lodging expenses.

Participating in research does not effect your health insurance premiums or co-pays.

What are my health risks in participating in research?

The goal of health research through clinical trials is to find better ways to treat diseases.

The risks are different for each study and are explained to you in full by a healthcare professional before you decide to participate.

For drug studies there are four phases to reduce the risk over time. The first phase has only 10-20 people that are monitored closely to ensure the drug is safe.

The number of people increases in each phase as we learn how people respond to the drug.

For some diseases trials are a better treatment option than approved treatments. This is often the case in cancer.

How can I participate in healthcare research?

There are two types of clinical trials: observational and interventional.

In an observational trial the sponsor is just looking at data about you. You can participate in observational trials by

joining a trial and answering questions the sponsor has for you. There is no health risk in an observational trial.

Examples of observational trials are HHS All of us study looking at health data from 1 million Americans to learn about health and disease.

In an interventional trial doctors will give you a medicine or medical device to understand how it improves your health.

You will be asked to see the doctor on a weekly or monthly basis for them to collect data on your health. They may also collect data from

devices and ask you about your experiences such as how easy it is to sleep, eat, or walk.
