Patient Mediated Research

Andaman7 DLS: the Continuous Evidence Platform

By Vincent Keunen (CEO, Andaman7) and Marc Botteman

Andaman7 DLS turns trial participants into partners. Patients gather health data in a GDPR-native Personal Health Record on their phone, then share consented data into research — continuously, from PHR to study.

Why life sciences need patient-mediated data

Real-world evidence, decentralized trials, patient-reported outcomes, rare diseases, equity and inclusion, and OTC drug capture all require collecting far more data directly from patients — not only from sites during sparse visits.

Traditional trials remain costly and slow. Regulators and payers increasingly expect longitudinal RWE and PROs alongside clinical measures. Patient Mediated Research (PMR) answers that demand by making the participant an active data partner.

Patient Mediated Research (PMR)

PMR puts patients at the centre: they manage their health first, then choose what to contribute to studies. Principles include privacy by default (on-device storage, no cloud health vault), comprehensive collection from hospitals, labs, devices and PROs, continuous engagement for registries, and inclusivity for rare diseases and remote participants.

When patients control their data, they move from passive subjects to driving partners — improving accuracy, retention and trust.

The Continuous Evidence Platform

Andaman7 uniquely combines an advanced Personal Health Record with an integrated clinical research platform. Patients consolidate EHRs, labs, devices and PROs on their smartphone; researchers receive anonymized, consented data for DCT and RWE without Andaman7 holding a cloud copy of health records.

A7 = PHR + PMR — the formula for next-generation clinical research.

We call this the patient-mediated Continuous Evidence Platform: evidence that flows from everyday care and patient life into studies, continuously.

GDPR-native privacy without cloud storage

Health data stay on the patient’s device. Andaman7 does not store user health data in the cloud and does not have direct access to it; the app is a tool for patients to share selected data with researchers under explicit consent — aligned with GDPR and similar privacy regimes worldwide.

Interoperability and aggregation

The PHR consolidates structured and unstructured data, documents and codified observations (LOINC, SNOMED and related standards). Interoperability via FHIR and peer standards enables exchange with hospitals, devices and PRO instruments while keeping the patient as the aggregation point.

FAQ

How does Patient Mediated Research turn trial participants into active partners?

Patients first manage their own health record on their phone, then decide what to share with a study. Explicit consent, on-device control and continuous engagement replace one-off site visits, so participants contribute as partners rather than passive subjects.

How does Andaman7 ensure GDPR compliance without cloud storage?

Health data are stored on the user’s smartphone, not in an Andaman7 cloud vault. The company provides tools for consented sharing and does not hold direct access to the health record, matching privacy-by-default expectations under GDPR and similar laws.

Which life-science trends make direct patient data collection essential?

RWE requirements, decentralized trials, PROs, rare-disease recruitment, equity and inclusion, CRaaCO, OTC capture and type-4 / HEOR studies all need richer data from patients between site visits — which only patient-mediated collection can scale.

How does combining a PHR and a research platform cut costs and speed up new treatments?

One integrated stack (PHR + PMR) reduces duplicate systems, site overhead and fragmented recruitment. Higher-quality longitudinal data and better retention shorten analysis cycles and help bring therapies to market faster at lower operational cost.

How does Andaman7 handle interoperability and aggregation of data from hospitals, devices and PROs?

Patients aggregate hospital EHRs, labs, medical devices and PROs into one PHR using health standards such as FHIR, LOINC and SNOMED. Researchers then receive consented, study-ready datasets from that patient-controlled aggregation point.
